چکیده

Streptobacillus moniliformis Levaditi et al. 1925 is the type and sole species of the genus Streptobacillus, and is of phylogenetic interest because of its isolated location in the sparsely populated and neither taxonomically nor genomically much accessed family 'Leptotrichiaceae' within the phylum Fusobacteria. The 'Leptotrichiaceae' have not been well characterized, genomically or taxonomically. S. moniliformis,is a Gram-negative, non-motile, pleomorphic bacterium and is the etiologic agent of rat bite fever and Haverhill fever. Strain 9901(T), the type strain of the species, was isolated from a patient with rat bite fever. Here we describe the features of this organism, together with the complete genome sequence and annotation. This is only the second completed genome sequence of the order Fusobacteriales and no more than the third sequence from the phylum Fusobacteria. The 1,662,578 bp long chromosome and the 10,702 bp plasmid with a total of 1511 protein-coding and 55 RNA genes are part of the Genomic Encyclopedia of Bacteria and Archaea project.

Acute Tetraplegia Caused by Rat Bite Fever in Snake Keeper and Transmission of Streptobacillus moniliformis

We report acute tetraplegia caused by rat bite fever in a 59-year old man (snake keeper) and transmission of Streptobacillus moniliformis. We found an identical characteristic bacterial pattern in rat and human samples, which validated genotyping-based evidence for infection with the same strain, and identified diagnostic difficulties concerning infection with this microorganism.

Experimental Streptobacillus Moniliformis Arthritis in the Chick Embryo

1. A strain of Streptobacillus moniliformis isolated from a case of rat bite fever in man has been found to produce infection of the developing chick embryo following inoculation of the chorio-allantois. 2. The disease in embryos is characterized by invasion of the blood stream and an almost exclusive localization of the infectious process to the synovial lining of the joints. 3. In the early s...

Prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis: a case of rat bite fever.

We report a case of rat bite fever caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis in Taiwan. It manifested as prosthetic valve endocarditis, which was cured by cardiac valve replacement and antimicrobial therapy. The DNA sequence of the 16S rRNA gene of S. moniliformis was detected in valve specimens by PCR and nucleotide sequencing.

Streptobacillus moniliformis as the causative agent in spondylodiscitis and psoas abscess after rooster scratches.

We report a case of Streptobacillus moniliformis spondylodiscitis accompanied by a psoas abscess in an 80-year-old man scratched by a rooster. S. moniliformis was identified from abscess fluid by use of 16S rRNA gene sequencing. After 18 weeks of antimicrobial therapy, the clinical condition of the patient improved.

Cellophane Membranes

A cellophane membrane has proved a simple device for separating the L variant of Streptobacillus moniliformis from the bacterial form, as reported by P6rezMiravete and Calder6n (1956). When a culture was inoculated on cellophane resting on clear medium, they observed the development of the L type colonies only on the agar, whereas bacterial growth flourished on the surface of the cellophane. It...
